SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):414 (abstract no. PD0266). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370625 AB Even with the low reported number of HIV/AIDS cases in Russia, the government agencies often are unable to ensure adequate health education and psychological support for people with HIV/AIDS and their families. From the moment a person is found HIV-positive and thoughout the course of the infection they are left to fend for themselves and to find out vital health information from other HIV-positive people. Doctors are often reluctant to explain the meaning of test results or to discuss treatment options with the patients. A series of 30 in-depth interviews were held with HIV-positive individuals at various stages of infection to determine their information and educational needs. A number of specifically targeted educational brochures were developed on the basis of this evaluation. The brochures were pre-tested with focus groups of HIV-positive individuals and workshops were held with medical staff of HIV-testing sites and AIDS clinic to encourage them to use the brochures in educating their patients.
